Meet Julie of The Business Builders Blog!

Your name: Julie Daq
Name of your blog: The Business Builder’s Blog
Blog social media accounts:
Meet Julie
Let’s get to know YOU:
Tell us a little bit about yourself (mini bio):
Julie Daq is a native Texan that now finds herself living on a small island off the coast of Washington.  After starting her first business in 2010, she realized she thoroughly enjoyed learning and testing business strategies more than the actual business she was running and over the next five years transitioned into being an Online Business Strategist to help others start and build a business that would allow them to set their own schedule, live where they want, and do something they actually enjoy.
What do you do outside of blogging (think school or work):
The Business Builder’s Blog is just a little piece of what I do.  I also do website development and design as well as have an interactive online business plan over at The Girl Boss Society.
What do you like to do on your down time?
When I’m not working, I can be found sailing around the San Juan Islands, hiking, kayaking with orcas, or eating french fries at my favorite Friday Harbor restaurant.
Blog niche:
Building an Online Business
What’s the purpose of your blog?
The purpose of The Business Builder’s Blog is to take the mystery out of building an online business – to explain not only the why, but also the how of different business building strategies.
Who’s your target?
The target audience is generally someone who wants to start an online business or who has started a business, but is still trying to build and grow it.
What’s the best way for your audience to contact you?
They can email me at
How would you describe your blogging style?
I would describe it as personable and educational.
When did you start blogging?
I began this blog in 2016, but I first started blogging in 2010 when I discovered WordPress!
What inspired you to start blogging?
With The Business Builder’s Blog, I kept seeing people asking the same questions in groups online and I wanted to provide a place for them to find, not only the answer, but resources to help them implement the strategy.
What’s the biggest change in your life since you started blogging?
Honestly, I think it has been connecting with the people who are asking those questions – now I have an easy way to give an in-depth answer.
Blogging goals:
  • Short term: Be consistent and build my list.
  • Long term: Offer classes, courses, and services that cater too people at all levels (meaning want to learn and do everything themselves to those who just want to purchase a finished product).
If you could start blogging all over again, what would you do differently?
I don’t know that I would do anything differently because I had to learn as I went.  BUT, if I started a blog knowing what I know now, I would start with a much more sound keyword strategy.
How do you motivate yourself to continue blogging?
It’s just one of the things I do each week – I break it up of 3-4 days which includes everything from keyword research and outlining to creating images, writing the post, and writing the corresponding email.
What attributes has helped you become successful blogger?
I’ve always been a fairly good writer and have enjoyed writing since I wrote my first “book”, “Puddles the Duck” when I was six.  I pursued journalism in high school and won several awards.
How have you tried to increase your blog traffic? Which way has been the most successful?
I have just now really started focusing on traffic.  I think Facebook has played an integral role between using the posts to answer questions I see people asking to using the promotional days in Facebook groups.
What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
That’s a tough one!  Each one has its place!  Right now I’m really enjoying Pinterest because I’m discovering how to use it as a search engine rather than just to pin yummy food and pretty pictures!
Most of your traffic comes from which social media platform?
Facebook currently contributes the most traffic to my site.
What’s your favourite blogging group on Facebook?
I think Business BFF’s is definitely one of my favorites!  Melyssa Griffin is one of those people who always gives substance and not just sales pitches and I appreciate that!
Do you have a freebie for your readers? If so, what is it? Do we need to subscribe to receive it?
I have a couple – I have a free workshop: Start an Online Business as well as a Resource Library that my audience can access.  You do have to subscribe, but once you subscribe to one, you get access to everything.
What’s your greatest win so far with blogging?
I think that would have to be all of the new connections I’ve made with people in various stages of building their businesses.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve so far with blogging?
Make it a routine – schedule it and be consistent.
Has blogging surprised you in any way? If so, how?
One of the things that has surprised me is how hard it is to get people to comment and interact!  So, if you’re ever on my blog, I would love to connect with you in the comments!
How often do you publish a post?
I publish a post on The Business Builder’s Blog once a week.
Have you had writer’s block? If so, how did you overcome it?
If I’m struggling to come up with a topic, I will look and see what questions people are asking online.  Usually one question produces multiple posts.
Do you have a blogging schedule? Daily theme? Please share.
I have a schedule when it comes to writing my posts: Mondays I do keyword research and outline the post, Tuesdays I create the images and write the post, Wednesdays I create a resource to go with it if needed, and Thursdays I write and schedule the email that corresponds with the post.
Have you guest posted for someone?
Do you accept guest posts? If yes, tell us about it!
I don’t currently accept guest posts on The Business Builder’s Blog, but I am getting ready to start doing a monthly blog round-up on The Girl Boss Society!
Have you made money from blogging? If so, how?
My blogs are so intertwined with the services I offer – they’re really just an outlet so I wouldn’t end up being one of those people who created site without a clear intention or focus.  So, I have The Business Builder’s Blog for teaching the how and why, The Girl Boss Society for walking ladies through starting a business from the very beginning, and then my services site (which is not a blog) for Island Business Design which is where purchases services.  So technically, at this point, I don’t make money from blogging.
How long had you been blogging before you made any money?
See above.
Who’s your favourite blogger before you started blogging and why? (Name and blog URL)
Honestly I’ve never really had one because I don’t spend a lot of time online reading – I’d prefer to spend my time living and creating my own story!
Who’s your favourite blogger now and why? (Name and blog URL)
Melyssa Griffin ( because her posts her super informative and personable!
What type of blogs are you interested in reading and why?
I like to read about online business strategies because I’m constantly learning new things!  I also like to read the personal/travel blogs of sailors and adventurers or people not living the “normal” life because I find them inspiring!
List the top 5 blogs you are reading currently: (Names and blog URLs)
Honestly, I don’t read too many blogs on a regular basis because I’m busy creating my own content and usually just read posts when I see something that catches my eye or when I’m doing research.  However, Melyssa Griffin:, is one of my favorite resources!
Give advice to someone who wants to start blogging:
Figure out your theme (or niche) and create your blog with a purpose.  So many people blog about all different subjects which is fine if it’s just meant to be a personal blog.  But, if you want to monetize it, it needs to be focused.
Tell us one thing your readers don’t know about you:
Completely unrelated to anything, but I can say (or sing) my ABCs backwards.
Anything else you’d like to share with us? Go for it!!!
This might sound like a cliche, but seriously, you only live once, spend your time doing something you enjoy!
Leave a message for your readers:
A good strategy is key.  And then consistency.  With those two things, you’re going to be successful!
