Tell us a little bit about yourself (mini bio):

Hi- I’m Shelby! I’m the blogger behind fitasamamabear.com. By trade I’m a Strength Coach, Nutrition Coach and of course chronic foodie. But most importantly, I’m a mama to a super cute little girl. I love  morning workouts, tasty meals and trying my best to live holistically (though there’s definitely a lot of trial and error there!). But most of all I love sharing knowledge on everything parent & health related.

What do you do outside of blogging (think school or work):

My real job is as a coach (personal trainer/nutrition) and dance instructor.

What do you like to do on your down time?

I’m a reader so I love getting lost in a good book. Obviously I adore working out but there are only so many times you can be active throughout the week! I live in Canada but love summertime so my favorite activity is actually just relaxing on my back deck in the warmth!

What’s the purpose of your blog? To both help as well as inspire other mamas to lead an active, healthy & natural lifestyle. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, every little change makes a difference!

Who’s your target? Moms! Specifically moms who enjoy or would like to be more active and healthy

What’s the best way for your audience to contact you? They can contact me directly at fitasamamabear@gmail.com – I read every single email that comes my way

How would you describe your blogging style? Passionate? I’m very honest in my approach to parenting though it may not be for most people but most of all I’m passionate about fitness and healthy food and I think that shines through.

When did you start blogging? Technically I’ve been blogging on my training site since 2012 but nothing much has come of it. I just started Fit as a Mama Bear this past year (2016) in November

What inspired you to start blogging? I really want to help others with some of the things I remember struggling with on my journey! Even if you don’t agree with my approach one hundred percent there’s always something you can do and no matter how little, it counts! I want to help moms realize that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing in health, fitness or parenting.

What’s the biggest change in your life since you started blogging? Hrm.. the amount of time I spend at a computer? Haha I think just how excited I get to share and write about what I’m doing.

Blogging goals:

  • Short term: Put out quality content on a regular basis and begin to connect with other bloggers!
  • Long term: Replace part of my immediate training hours with my blog and ideally grow my following of healthy mamas!

If you could start blogging all over again, what would you do differently? Research Pinterest! I’m not great at the social media/networking side of blogging. I love writing but the ins and outs of growing your social media presence still baffled me

How do you motivate yourself to continue blogging? I enjoy it. I like being able to write anywhere and share my methods and knowledge. Knowing I may be able to help other mamas stay inspired  keeps me going

What attributes has helped you become successful blogger? My blogging mentor has been beyond helpful getting started as she’s great to bounce ideas off of or vent when I’m confused. The FB groups I belong to are super helpful also both to help get my name out but also to connect with other bloggers and their struggles.

How have you tried to increase your blog traffic? Which way has been the most successful? Yes and no. I’ve tried in the sense that I have extremely consistent with content and posting on socials but my goal this year is to do a few facebook ads and giveaways in hopes that will drive more.

What’s your favourite social media platform and why? Hrm right now it might be twitter but I never thought I’d say that! I like twitter because it’s really quick to shoot off a tweet and I don’t always need a picture. I feel like I think too much with FB and Instagram and end up not posting.

Most of your traffic comes from which social media platform? I have yet to narrow that down! My traffic isn’t high (1500 pageviews per month) and I haven’t overly analyzed where they’re coming from.

What’s your favourite blogging group on Facebook? Oi! That’s a hard one. Blogging 101 is great but so is Mom Bloging 101 because it’s more specific to mamas.

Do you have a freebie for your readers? If so, what is it? Do we need to subscribe to receive it?  Yes I do! If you hop on to my site and subscribe to my newsletter you’ll receive three free training programs! One for bodyweight to workout anywhere, one with bands and one with dumbbells so you can vary depending on what you have access to.

What’s your greatest win so far with blogging? I’d say getting ads up on my site because I feel like that took me FOREVER but when I cracked 1000 page views I got pretty excited.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve so far with blogging? You need to network and social media is *almost* more important than writting (sadly)

Has blogging surprised you in any way? If so, how? I didn’t realize I had so much to write about! I honestly don’t have time to get all my ideas into blogs. I thought I’d struggle but there is SO MUCH I want to share!

How often do you publish a post? Right now about 4x per week but that’s because I somehow got ahead. My goal is twice per week.

Have you had writer’s block? If so, how did you overcome it? Not yet! Everytime I have an idea I write it on my “ideas” note so I can always go back and chose from the list when I have time to write.

Do you have a blogging schedule? Daily theme? Please share! I wish. I pretty much do eveything between naps times and after bedtime. It’s tricky to balance an actual job and launch a blog. Oh and the 18m old 😉 she keeps me on my toes!

Do you accept guest posts? If yes, tell us about it! Yes! I love having guest posts on my site because it gives a different view and voice for readers. I do however prefer that our niches are similar and our general beliefs about what we write are similar.

Have you made money from blogging? If so, how? Yes but not much. I contribute monthly to In The Kids Kitchen and am paid per post. I also have amazon affiliates on my site but to date I’ve made like seventy six cents (woo) haha

How long had you been blogging before you made any money? I started doing a contribution blog almost as soon as I launched so I lucked out there. But that’s about it. I imagine it will be a while before I see any type of profit.

Who’s your favourite blogger before you started blogging and why? (Name and blog URL)

Jeez I have  A LOT! I love Angela from Oh She Glows (www.ohsheglows.com) because her recipes are the best thing of life. I love Kate from Wellness Mamas (www.wellnessmama.com) because she taught me so much about natural living.

 

Who’s your favourite blogger now and why? (Name and blog URL)

It would have to be Jen over at Sugar Spice & Glitter (www.sugarspiceandglitter.com) because she is amazing at what she does. Really, she is my biggest inspiration because she is so open, successful and honest.

What type of blogs are you interested in reading and why? I love healthy recipes because I’m a foodie and I love learning new tricks on parenting because I pretty much just make that up as I go!

Give advice to someone who wants to start blogging: It’s more work than you think. If you truly want to be successful treat it like any other job. You’ll be working all hours of the day and your to do list won’t ever be completed. Stay consistent and work hard.

Tell us one thing your readers don’t know about you: I’m the crazy cat lady! Really and truly. I have two indoor cats as well as a host of outdoor cats that I take to get fixed and feed daily 😉

Leave a message for your readers: Always remember that small steps are still steps! So often now we need to “go big o go home” we need to have the most intense workouts or go completely sugar free. But that’s not the case- far from it! Any step you take to be more active or healthy is an awesome one and you should keep at it.
