Let’s get to know YOU:
Tell us a little bit about yourself (mini bio): Professional city girl.
What do you do outside of blogging (think school or work): By day, I work in government.
What do you like to do on your down time? Write, sleep, eat, repeat.
Blog niche: Lifestyle. Or, life + style.
What’s the purpose of your blog? I’d like to think that I’m telling the authentic story of a young professional whose love for adventures in and around the city is almost insatiable.
Who’s your target? Young women, 18-35, who live in or near urban areas.
What’s the best way for your audience to contact you? Usually e-mail but I respond to the occasional DM.
How would you describe your blogging style? I jump around depending on what helps me express my thoughts the best. I do a lot of insight blogging through sharing firsthand experiences but I do use some ambition writing and life blogging too.
When did you start blogging? April of 2012.
What inspired you to start blogging? At that time I think I was in need of finding my voice. I’ve always loved writing and so talking about the things I was doing and building a brand, however small, seemed like a really great outlet.
What’s the biggest change in your life since you started blogging? My employment situation has varied a lot since I started writing. Blogging has always been a way for me to maintain some ownership over something that was all mine while telling my story and having a creative platform despite whatever else I had going on.
- Short term: Grow my followers and learn what they enjoy reading most.
- Long term: Network with brands and create meaningful relationships between them and my readers.
If you could start blogging all over again, what would you do differently? I wish I had known the value of my writing a lot earlier. Once you understand your niche and your audience, it is a lot easier to market yourself.
How do you motivate yourself to continue blogging? It can be hard! Most weeknights when I get home from work I want to curl up and just sip a cup of tea but the feeling of a successful post is too irresistible to pass up sometimes.
What attributes has helped you become successful blogger? I’m an extremely passionate person and when I find something I love, I want to immerse myself in it. My writing journey has been that way for me.
How have you tried to increase your blog traffic? Which way has been the most successful? Again, I think knowing your niche is really important as well as knowing how and when to engage your readers. A lot of my readers use Instagram so I’ll tease posts on there either before or after going live to generate traffic.
What’s your favourite social media platform and why? Instagram! The instant gratification of being able to engage so easily is really great.
Most of your traffic comes from which social media platform? My Facebook page pushes out my posts so that drives quite a bit of traffic.
What’s your favourite blogging group on Facebook? I have to give a lot of credit to InfluenceHer (formerly Her Campus Blogging Network). They’re very organized.
Do you have a freebie for your readers? If so, what is it? Do we need to subscribe to receive it? No, but I’d like to work on this.
What’s your greatest win so far with blogging? Being named a top five style blogger on The Boston A-List two years in a row was incredible.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve so far with blogging? To not give up. If you love something, you should never give up on it.
Has blogging surprised you in any way? If so, how? I’m amazed at how many people say to me, “Oh, you’re @vanessainboston.” It cracks me up. I feel like I’m this character people only know from social media and, in a way, I guess that’s probably true.
How often do you publish a post? At least weekly, more if I have time to develop amazing content.
Have you had writer’s block? If so, how did you overcome it? Yes! Writer’s Block usually comes about when I’m severely anxious about something. If I’m in such a spot where I can’t write, I know I need to take a breather, maybe even a nap, walk it off or do something else that makes me happy. Journaling also helps because it helps me channel my desire to write into something concrete that I can use down the road if I feel like it.
Do you have a blogging schedule? Daily theme? Please share! I do not but I do feature a lot of #wcw, WanderlustWednesdays and Satur-d.i.y. content on my Facebook page.
Have you guest posted for someone?
- For whom? I recently wrote a travel post for Trips Travel Agency out of Boston.
- Blog URL: http://www.
Do you accept guest posts? If yes, tell us about it! I don’t. I like to feature all original content.
Have you made money from blogging? If so, how? I have made money in the form of sponsored posts, product reviews and monetary compensation by promoting events.
How long had you been blogging before you made any money? About a year.
Who’s your favourite blogger before you started blogging and why? (Name and blog URL) I really loved Amy Breckenridge (a fellow Boston Blogger). I admire her style, passion for baking and her adventures and her precious kitties. http://www.
Who’s your favourite blogger now and why? (Name and blog URL) Laura Lacquer is my absolute fave. I’ve really grown into my sense of style and when I’m off duty, this lady is #goals. https://
What type of blogs are you interested in reading and why? I read other Boston-area (lifestyle) blogs mostly because I like to see how other bloggers evolve.
