Meet Wayne of Kuaby!

Your name: Wayne Liew
Name of your blog: kuaby
Blog social media accounts:
Meet Wayne #TheBloggerBehindTheBlog
Let’s get to know YOU:
Tell us a little bit about yourself (mini bio):
I am always curious about my ability to build and grow something from scratch. Since I was 16, I am always starting new websites as soon as I get an idea. I was running 100+ niche sites across a wide variety of topics just to make money out of them. At one point, I started thinking “What if I killed all of them, and put all my time and effort into just one site?” That’s how my current blog, kuaby, started.
What do you do outside of blogging (think school or work):
I work for a company based in Kuala Lumpur called Mindvalley as an online advertising specialist. The role involves managing advertising campaigns on Google AdWords and Facebook while making sure every dollar we spent results in positive returns.
What do you like to do on your down time?
When I am not at work, and not working on kuaby, I like to explore the city I’m in while practicing my photography skills. I am also a loyal subscriber of DailyVee. While others watch Netflix or cable TV, I tune in to Gary if I need to chill.

Blog niche:

What’s the purpose of your blog?
The purpose of kuaby is really to provide travelers with information to plan their upcoming trips. The site may not have the most interesting or the most beautiful pictures of a destination. However, it becomes useful if you are trying to figure out which bus to take to reach a particular attraction, or whether an attraction is worth visiting, for example.

Who’s your target?
My target audience are travelers who are researching and planning their upcoming trips.

What’s the best way for your audience to contact you?
By email at, or through any of the social media channels above.

How would you describe your blogging style?
I try to make my blog posts and content as informational as possible. It can be very boring for them, but you are going to find them useful if you are looking for more information about your upcoming destination.

When did you start blogging?

I started blogging when I was 16, which is more than 10 years ago. kuaby, however, was started in January 2016.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I always wanted to work on a project where my skills, goals, passion, and things that I want to learn come together. Starting a travel-related site has allowed me to combine my skills in online marketing, my goal to build and grow something from scratch, my passion in travel and skills that I want to learn like photography and writing, into a single project.

What’s the biggest change in your life since you started blogging?
After I started my blog, especially after I announced it to my friends, my life became more fulfilling. Not only I get to work on something I love, like-minded people started approaching me to discuss about growing their own site or project. This shifted the conversations I have on a daily basis to a whole new level.

Blogging goals:
  • Short term: To see my blog replace my full time job as an income source.
  • Long term: To build a travel brand around my blog.
If you could start blogging all over again, what would you do differently?
I wished I would have started earlier. Looking back, there are so many opportunities that I have missed. For example, I didn’t jump into many of the popular social networks today when they were only having very few users back then.

How do you motivate yourself to continue blogging?

For me, going public with the work that I am putting into kuaby pressures me (in a good way) to continue. Having an accountability partner helps me immensely too!

What attributes has helped you become successful blogger?

I am not a successful blogger by any means. I am still learning my way around things.

However, the two things that brought me to where I am so far are patience and my persistence to turn every task into a process or a habit.

How have you tried to increase your blog traffic? Which way has been the most successful?
I try to give every tactic that I come across a try. I have been quite successful with search engine traffic, which is contributing to more than 90% of my website traffic. When I publish a blog post or a piece of content, I will make sure it is the best content created about an attraction. Once the content is live, I will reach out to website owners and other bloggers to see if they are interested in linking to it or sharing the content on their social media profiles.

What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
Facebook, because it is the social network that brings kuaby the most traffic. 🙂

Most of your traffic comes from which social media platform?
Facebook. More specifically, Facebook groups.

What’s your favourite blogging group on Facebook?
My favorite is the Facebook group called Travel Bloggers Network. I am part of many Facebook groups, and many of them are not moderated properly. They are either filled with spam or self-promotional postings.

Do you have a freebie for your readers? If so, what is it? Do we need to subscribe to receive it?
Not at the moment, but I am in the midst of creating a few. 🙂

What’s your greatest win so far with blogging?

The site received more than 5,000 unique visitors in December 2016. You can read more about it here:

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve so far with blogging?

The biggest lesson I have so far is that it is very difficult to monetize a blog solely through ads. I am in the midst of coming up with products and services that I can sell as an alternative to serving ads on kuaby.

Has blogging surprised you in any way? If so, how?

I am surprised that even though my site does not have a lot of content in terms of the number of blog posts, I have readers writing to me, to tell me that the content has been incredibly helpful for them. I am even meeting with one of my readers next week because she wanted to thank me for helping with the planning of her trip to Malaysia.

How often do you publish a post?

I try to publish a new piece of content every week, but this depends a lot on the length of the upcoming post.

Have you had writer’s block? If so, how did you overcome it?
Not really. There are simply too many attractions to write about. I just don’t have enough time for them. Hahaha….

Do you have a blogging schedule? Daily theme? Please share!

Since kuaby is only my side hustle, I work on it only in the morning before work, and in the evening after I come back from the office. In the morning, I try to write as much as I can, and evenings are mostly for marketing-related tasks.

Have you guest posted for someone?
Not yet, but I have contributed to a couple of collaborative posts where a number of bloggers come together to contribute to a single blog post.
Do you accept guest posts? If yes, tell us about it!
Not at the moment.

Have you made money from blogging? If so, how?
Yes. I am earning some tiny revenue from Google AdSense, and Amazon Associates program. Once in a while, there will be some commissions coming from affiliate programs managed by online travel agencies such as Agoda and

How long had you been blogging before you made any money?

I started monetizing my site with Google AdSense almost immediately because I already have an account with them before.

Who’s your favourite blogger before you started blogging and why? (Name and blog URL)

My favorite blog before I started blogging is Smart Passive Income by Pat Flynn. It gave me a lot of ideas on how I should promote my blog and the type of content I need to create in order to attract visitors to my site.

Who’s your favourite blogger now and why? (Name and blog URL)
My favorite blogger now is Glen Allsopp who runs Gaps. I like how he spotlights interesting online business ideas that he stumbled upon. Reading his blog opened my eyes on the type of business ideas that can take off on the Internet.

What type of blogs are you interested in reading and why?

I love reading blogs run by an authentic blogger who is actually practicing what he or she is teaching.
