Let’s get to know YOU:
Tell us a little bit about yourself (mini bio): I am currently a Senior at the University of Arizona studying Public Health. I love pretty much everything related to health and fitness (if that’s not obvious from the content of my blog). I hope that one day, in the near future, I will be able to design and sell my own at home and in gym workout programs, and hope to start an individualized personal training and health coaching program with those programs. I love helping people in anyway that I can, and I am definitely a huge people person. If this whole fitness blogging thing doesn’t work out, I will become a certified health education specialist and teach people about different health topics through prevention and awareness programs.
What do you do outside of blogging (think school or work): Outside of blogging I am a full time student…but only for the remainder of the semester as I am graduating in May. So currently when I am not blogging, I am either doing homework or feverishly job hunting.
What do you like to do on your down time? In my down time I like to do a lot of things, most of those things are active like hiking and biking, but I also really like eating. I love trying out new restaurants, especially if they are gluten and dairy free!
Blog niche: Health, wellness, and fitness
What’s the purpose of your blog? The purpose of my blog is to educate people about health and fitness. I share my own personal struggles and successes with fitness, body image, and dieting in hopes that other people will relate in some way or another, and feel inclined to start their fitness journey or reach out to me for help. But it is really a virtual health education tool.
Who’s your target? My target is really anyone that is interested in health and fitness or anyone who wants to start getting into it. I would say I target women more, just because I am a woman. I think age wise, my target audience is 18 to 30, although I also have some mom’s that follow me and love what I create (especially my own mom).
What’s the best way for your audience to contact you?
Through email or through Facebook messenger, I am usually pretty responsive.
How would you describe your blogging style?
My blogging style is a lot like the way that I speak. A lot of people say that when they read my blog, they can hear my voice in their heads, and I almost think that I should start a vlog so that people who don’t know me will know how I speak and what voice they should be using to read my blog. But my style is energetic, and to the point. I don’t generally fluff up anything that I am writing, although I do tend to make things very detailed, especially if they are my personal stories. I also tend to have a ton of run on sentences, because I just type whatever I am thinking.
When did you start blogging?
I started blogging in September of 2016
What inspired you to start blogging?
I wanted to start blogging because I wanted to share my story with other people. I saw a lot of other fitness stars that had blogs, that turned into businesses and I thought that if they could do it, I could too. I also wanted to start blogging as a way to keep myself accountable. It really helps me to keep a regular exercise schedule, which is a blessing in disguise. Through the College of Public Health we are required to do an internship to graduate, and starting this blog was actually my Public Health internship last semester, but I have kept it going because I want to reach more people.
What’s the biggest change in your life since you started blogging?
I think that since I have started blogging I have become a lot happier. Having a creative outlet like this has really helped me to find more joy in my life. I am simply elated when anyone reaches out to me and says that they have read my blog, or they loved my latest post, that really makes me feel good and like I am getting through to people.
- Short term: I think my biggest short term goal is to increase my following. That happens through little increases each day, and I think that I will be able to greatly increase it in no time. I also want to get a nicer camera so that my pictures look better…but that may be more of a long term thing.
- Long term: Long term I hope to have a fully functional workout plan, with a specific amount of weeks, and with specific exercises for each day. I also hope to have a personal training certification or health coach certification so that I can start more of a business with my blog.
If you could start blogging all over again, what would you do differently?
If I could start all over again I would join the blogging Facebook groups much sooner! Those have been so helpful, and I wish that I had known about them when I first started so that I could ask questions when I got stuck. They also offer a lot of exposure, which I would have loved when I was first starting.
How do you motivate yourself to continue blogging?
I think I stay motivated because I honestly love writing, and blogging. I don’t ever see it as work, it is always the fun thing I get to do everyday. I also am continually learning new things whether it’s about blogging, or fitness, and I love sharing what I am learning with people. I think people’s support keeps me motivated as well.
What attributes has helped you become successful blogger?
I am very passionate about what I do, and I think that has really helped me. You should never do anything that you are not passionate about, and I am so deeply passionate about fitness and sharing my experiences and I think that has helped me grow exponentially.
How have you tried to increase your blog traffic? Which way has been the most successful?
Writing more posts each week is the one way I have tried to increase my blog traffic, and it has definitely worked. When you are posting more frequently and more consistently it helps people to notice you. I have also networked with other bloggers through the Facebook groups that I am in, and I think that has really helped to increase my traffic. Bloggers want to help other bloggers.
What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
I really like Instagram, especially now that they have stories. I like just being able to snap a picture and connect with my followers, I think that it is really efficient. I don’t think it really drives too many people to my blog, but it definitely lets them know when I have a new post. I also really like the story feature because I can share snapshots of my day with my followers. I think it helps me seem more human and authentic.
Most of your traffic comes from which social media platform?
I think through Facebook, because it is easy for people to click on the links that I post.
What’s your favourite blogging group on Facebook?
That’s tough. I really like GirlBoss Bloggers because I feel really comfortable asking questions and communicating with other bloggers. And I also like Grow your Blog because right now we are doing a 30 day challenge and I think it is really teaching me a lot.
Do you have a freebie for your readers? If so, what is it? Do we need to subscribe to receive it?
Yes! You can get my Ebook Workout Guide for free. You don’t need to subscribe to receive it, it is on my blog under the workout tab, and in one of my most recent posts.
What’s your greatest win so far with blogging?
My greatest win is that I am finally reaching people that i don’t already know. My user base has expanded, and that is a huge win for me.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve so far with blogging?
I have learned to not get butt hurt when your friends say they read your blog but actually don’t. I have run into that a lot because I share a lot of stuff on my blog so I know if someone doesn’t read it based on questions they ask me.
Has blogging surprised you in any way? If so, how?
I am surprised by how much I enjoy it! I think when I was doing it for internship credit it seemed like more of a chore for me, but now I am doing it just for fun and for myself I am really loving it.
How often do you publish a post?
Definitely twice a week but I sometimes will do 3 times a week, sometimes 4
Have you had writer’s block? If so, how did you overcome it?
Yes, all the time. Usually i just ask the people around me for blog post suggestions and that can get me going.
Do you have a blogging schedule? Daily theme? Please share!
Not really. I write blog posts in my planner for every Tuesday and Thursday, and any other posts aren’t really planned. I need to get a better, more defined schedule.
Have you guest posted for someone? Yes!
For whom? Chelle Del Rosario at CoffeeHeartMind
Blog URL: coffeeheartmind.com
Do you accept guest posts? If yes, tell us about it!
I haven’t ever done a guest post on my blog, but I would be open to it!
Have you made money from blogging? If so, how?
Yes, a very small amount from Google Adsense.
How long had you been blogging before you made any money?
About 4 months
Who’s your favourite blogger before you started blogging and why? (Name and blog URL)
Before I started I would follow the Tone It Up blog at toneitup.com, I don’t think I really knew the scope of the blogging world until I joined it. I also followed my friend Kirsten’s lifestyle blog at thewanderingbrunette.com
Who’s your favourite blogger now and why? (Name and blog URL)
Now I have too many to choose from! I really like Melyssa Griffin at melyssagriffin.com formerly The Nectar Collective. She blogs about blogging and I find all of her posts so extremely helpful. Whenever I am struggling with something she almost always has a blog post related to my problem.
What type of blogs are you interested in reading and why?
I read a lot of different blogs, but the things that most interest me are health and fitness blogs (for obvious reasons), I also enjoy any blogs about self love, self acceptance, body image, gluten free foods, and recipes. I think I relate most to those topics, which is why I like reading them. I love a good gluten free blog because it gives me a lot of food ideas that I probably would have never thought of on my own.
