Meet Sam of Dove Cottage Blog!

Your name: Sam

Let’s get to know YOU:

Tell us a little bit about yourself (mini bio): I live with my husband and our puppy in our first home, which I am currently trying to transform into my dream vintage cottage-style home.

What do you do outside of blogging (think school or work):

I work full-time in marketing

What do you like to do on your down time?

I spent a lot of my spare time working on my home, and love crafting too. I’m currently teaching myself how to use a sewing machine, and love trying my hand at new crafts too – my next project is going to involve some watercolour pens I’ve recently come across!

Blog niche: Home interiors, DIY on a budget, crafting, with a few recipes thrown in there too!

What’s the purpose of your blog? I think that anywhere can be a home if you fill it with things you love, and through my blog I try to show how you can create this feeling in your own home, especially if you are on a tight budget, and with limited space.

Who’s your target? I’d like to think I inspire people like me, who are perhaps not in their dream home just yet, however want to transform it as much as they can. I post DIY crafts, room makeovers and advice on how to achieve the look you want without breaking the bank.

What’s the best way for your audience to contact you? Send me a message on any of my social media accounts!

How would you describe your blogging style? Friendly, approachable and honest.

When did you start blogging? I’ve now been blogging for around a year and a half, however started to take it much more seriously in the last couple of months.

What inspired you to start blogging? When we moved into our first home, I became obsessed with all things interiors and drew inspiration from so many lovely people and their beautiful homes on Instagram. After a few months I plucked up the courage to start my own IG account charting my journey trying to transform our fairly modest newer house into my dream vintage home. When that started to take off I decided to launch a blog as somewhere I could go into more detail about everything I was up to.

What’s the biggest change in your life since you started blogging?

Meeting like-minded people both online and in real life has been so much fun. I’m naturally a very shy and introverted person, so opening up and putting myself out there (albeit online), has been a huge change for me, but a good one.

Blogging goals:

  • Short term: To continue building my blog and social media, and to write helpful posts people are interested in reading
  • Long term: My ultimate dream is to be able to turn what is currently a hobby into a full-time career

If you could start blogging all over again, what would you do differently?

I’ve only just recently got a decent camera, so am currently going though all my old blog posts retaking the images, as they were originally taken on my phone, and the difference in quality is huge! I’ve learnt loads about photography too, so would have tried to improve my photo-taking skills earlier.

How do you motivate yourself to continue blogging?

I write about areas I genuinely love, so enjoy blogging and don’t find I need too much motivation to continue. When I get home from work I love spending an hour or so in the evening working on something new. I think doing it in small chunks like that helps it feel less of a chore.

What attributes has helped you become successful blogger? I’m not sure if I’m successful yet! But I think I’m very friendly and approachable, which I hope comes across in my writing style.

How have you tried to increase your blog traffic? Which way has been the most successful? I’m currently looking into Pinterest, which has been a lot of fun, plus I’ve been teaching myself about SEO, and how it can increase traffic. I’ve seen a little increase already.

What’s your favourite social media platform and why? I absolutely love Instagram, I love the way it’s far more visual than the others and is easier to find and connect with others.

Most of your traffic comes from which social media platform? Instagram, for sure

What’s your favourite blogging group on Facebook?

I’m in so many, and they’re all helpful in different ways. Some focus on the more technical side of things, which is really helpful, and some are more of a forum to discuss issues etc. I would definitely recommend joining as many as you can.

What’s your greatest win so far with blogging? I was contacted by my favourite home interiors shop, Laura Ashley asking if I’d like to work with them on a collaboration, which was amazing. I’ve since worked on three posts with them, and even got the opportunity to attend their press show before Christmas, to check out their new collection!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve so far with blogging? To not let your insecurities get in the way. I’m naturally I very shy and introverted person, and so many times I’ve been so nervous to press ‘publish’ on a post, or put myself out there, but there’s really nothing to be scared of – there’s room for everyone on the internet, and I’ve mostly had an overwhelmingly positive reaction to my work.

Has blogging surprised you in any way? If so, how?

How often do you publish a post? I try to post once or twice a week, however it really depends on what I’ve got going on and how much time I can dedicate to blogging that week

Do you have a blogging schedule? Daily theme? Please share!

Not really, I try to post at least once or twice a week, and I don’t really stick to themes – I just blog whatever I’m thinking about that week!

Do you accept guest posts? If yes, tell us about it! At the moment I don’t, however it’s something I would like to look into when I have the time.

Have you made money from blogging? If so, how? So far I haven’t made any money from blogging, but have received products in return for posts and reviews, which is cool

Who’s your favourite blogger now and why? (Name and blog URL) I’ve recently come across – what an amazing inspirational blog! And their home is just beautiful.

What type of blogs are you interested in reading and why? I love reading about home interiors, particularly posts about home makeovers and how people have renovated their homes on a budget, I find it so inspirational.

Give advice to someone who wants to start blogging: I wouldn’t overthink or invest too much time (or money) into the technical side of blogging too much, for example setting up a really professional looking blog, researching SEO etc,  just start getting your writing out there and the rest can come along later. Putting together great content is the no.1 most important thing, so start with that!

Tell us one thing your readers don’t know about you: I trained to be a journalist, however decided against going down that route as I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Instead, I took up Marketing and PR as a job, as I’ve always loved writing, so this allowed me to still focus on this. So, you can see how getting into blogging is perfect for me!
